To me learning
the Dhamma is like learning Mathematics or Sciences such as
Physics or Chemistry. One cannot understand mathematics or science by
mere listening or
passive reading:
The person by him/herself has to apply the principles and laws heard or
read.
However, when we look around we see a lot of people trying to learn
Dhamma the way most people
study history, or geography--by merely memorizing the teachings of the
Buddha. This might help
calm the mind temporarily, but it would not result in attaining higher
levels of the mind.
Mere reading or listening can bring one a lot of knowledge, but
understanding and being able to
apply brings wisdom .
Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.
Homage to the Dhamma "Svakkhato bhagavata dhammo, sanditthiko, akaliko, ehi passiko,
opanayiko,
paccattam veditabbo vinnuhiti."
