Bhikkhuni Kusuma, M.A., Ph.D.,

The first and foremost among female monks in Theravada Buddhism Bhikkhuni Kusuma, M.A., Ph.D

Now 75 years old, Ven. Bhikkhuni Kusuma was born into a devout Buddhist family in Sri Lanka. She taught school (Biology & Chemistry, and English) for about 25 years before becoming a nun. She holds a BA in Theravada Buddhism, Pali and English (1974), and an MA in Theravada Buddhism (1982). She received two PhDs (1987 and 2001) with thesis topics relating to nuns.

A popular speaker who nearly glows with compassion and kindness, Ven. Kusuma is one of only a few Sri Lankan bhikkhunis who can teach in English. For many years she gave weekly radio talks for the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, usually in English, regarding Buddhism. She recently toured Australia giving many talks, always in her lucid and simple manner; her discourses in Sydney resulted in the book entitled, Living in Peace.

This spring she will travel through the USA, giving talks to lovingly encourage and instruct us, too, on how to live in peace.

The Book "Lessons of the Lotus" and Buddhist Dhamma cassette tapes and CD's can be obtained from the temple.

"Bhante Wimala's heartfelt concern for the suffering and the simple remedies he draws from the Buddhas's teachings will be a source of strength for everyone confused by the pressures of modern life."

-from the Foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama
