House
Construction Project
We
sponsor 10 houses of the 25 houses to be built under the phase 2 of Sri
Subodha Foundation's Tsunami Relief Housing Project (Link to
www.subodha.org). It
will cost about US $ 5000 for a house including essential household
utensils. These houses are constructed according to Urban
Development Authority (UDA)
approved plan (Link to house plan. pdf ).
The
construction of houses is delayed initially due to a strike called
out by the surveyors. This
caused a problem of preparing the layout plan for houses to be
built. After weeks of discussion with Urban Development Authority of
Sri Lanka, Tsunami Relief Housing Project was launched at Monrovia Estate,
Hikkaduwa, Galle on 14th of May. The Foundation laying ceremony was
held at the reserved land with the participation of Ven. Wattegama
Dhammawasa Nayaka Thero, the Australian Deputy High Commissioner to
Sri Lanka Mr. Mathew Hynds, the Deputy General Manager of Central
Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) Mr. G.H. Pathmasiri and other
distinguished guest. Unfortunately further construction of houses
hampered again due to a conflict about the land.
Housing project was re started in 13th of July and
expects to be completed by 15th of October.
So far most of the houses are up to roof level and more than
100 CECB employees are engaged.
Scholarship for Students affected by Tsunami
The Educational Scholarship award ceremony for
students was held at Weligama on 14th of May with the participation
of Ven. Wattegama Dhammawasa thero, Southern Inspector General of
Police Mr. E.W. Prathapasinghe and other distinguished guests.

other school items at the opening ceremony.
Two separate bank accounts were opened one for Weligama
Students (under Mr. Wimalasooriya) and another one for Hikkaduwa
students, under Mr. Aruna Shantha Rannula).
Rev. Dhammawasa transfers required money at the end of each
month from MFHTV to above mention accounts. Mr. Wimalsooriya and Mr.
Rannula distribute money among the students at their local temple or
at a local school.
A check worth of US $ 4875.00 was handed over
to Dr. Aruna Dissanyake of university of Ruhuna to be distributed
among thirteen students for a period of up to 20 months. Since
University of Ruhuna was closed due to several reasons, it was
unable to distribute the money among the students until first week
of August. Individual accounts in favor of each scholarship
recipients were opened at Bank of Ceylon, University of Ruhuna
Branch, Wellamadama, Matara. These documents were handed over to the
students in a small ceremony at University of Ruhuna, in the
presence of Rev. Dhammawasa, Dean of faculty of Science Prof.
