Sri Lanka,
the
nation hardest hit by the tidal waves that wrecked damage across Asia,
reported a confirmed death toll of nearly 35,000 and more than 1.5
million homeless.
The Sri Lankan Community in Michigan has launched a fund raising program
via the Great Lakes Buddhist Vihara to help the thousands of victims to
survive and rebuild.
Thank You!!!!
It
is with great gratitude we say "thank you" to all of you who
contributed money, time and energy to this extremely worthy cause. You
can truly feel joy in your hearts thinking that your kind and unselfish
action will result in the quenching of human agony, despair and
disbelief. With the help
of generous people like you we were able to collect about
US$ 91,000. We acknowledged by letters written to you along
with official receipts all your remittances except of those whose
addresses could not be traced. If we have inadvertently missed any one
of you please contact us. We will immediately respond to you.
Today, as we say “thank you”
to the all of you who contributed to HSLDRF, what you hear is not our
voice but the voices of all those in need of help. The sigh of relief,
the little smile on the face, of each victim is your reward that you
could proudly preserve in your memory for the rest of your lives.

25
families of tsunami victims were settled in the 25 houses in this scheme
on 23rd December 2005 after holding a ceremonial function. At
this function the Sri Lanka Govt's Minister of Urban Development and
Water Supply Mr. Dinesh Gunawardhana, some other Ministers and MPS, The
Most Venerable Theripehe Somananda - The Chief Prelate of Udarata
Amarapura Sect and Ven. Wattegama Dhammawasa Thero- The Sanganayaka for
Australia were present while Mr. Mathew Heinse – Deputy High
Commissioner representing the Australian High Commission and Mrs.
Christina Prefontaine- Counselor (Political and Public Affairs)
representing the Canadian High Commission were present. Some of these
distinguished guests addressed the gathering.
The
houses in this scheme are of 700 sq. feet and costing Rs. 5,00000 each.
And each house contains two bedrooms, two verandahs (rear and front), a
kitchen and a toilet room. Each house is further complete with water and
electricity.
In
addition to supplying a house to each family, a new push cycle was
presented. For home gardening plants like coconut, mangoes, lime and
karapincha were distributed among all the families.
The
selection of the 25 families was made after a very close study of their
present conditions. These families, due to the ethnic war prevailing in
the northern and the eastern parts of the country had fled from those
areas and found shelter in huts built by them unlawfully on the beaches
of Hikkaduwa area. They could not live anymore on the beach due to the
tsunami and were forced to live in a temporary camp at the school
grounds of the Jinaraja Vidyala. They were thus selected for these new
houses.
These
houses were the result of the kind donations made chiefly by the
following foreign organizations and religious institutions:
- The Great Lakes
Buddhist Vihara of Southfield, Michigan.
- The Windsor
Buddhist Vihara of Canada.
- Sri
Lanka Foundation, Los Angeles.
- Sri
Lanka Disaster Relief Fund, Sidney.
- Triple
Gem Of The North-Minnesota – Banthe Sathi
- Some
individual donors.
Sri Subodha
Foundation and the Sri Subodharama Sasana Seva society, Peradeniya thank
all the kind donors mentioned above.
